Have you ever found yourself in a place where you felt trap? You daydream of what it would be like to be free. You see others live their lives in absolute bliss, doing things they enjoy and you think to yourself, “Will I ever be able to experience that kind of freedom?”

If that’s how you feel today or you’ve been there in the past, you know exactly what it feels like. It’s like being forced to be something you’re not. To be a person you no longer identify with.

That was me several years ago. I had knowingly and happily taken on a role that came with a heavy responsibility, a burden at times. For the first few years I was thriving and doing very well, but as time went on and I started evolving as a person, I became disenchanted. This went on for another year, and as I recall, it became emotionally and mentally draining.

As I reflect back on those days, I can honestly say I felt trapped. The thought of freeing myself came with guilt.  It wasn’t until I began looking at my own well-being and happiness that I decided to make a change. A change that resulted in a deeper sense of purpose, self-awareness and personal freedom.

You may be wondering, “What changed?” Let me share it with you in 5 steps:

  1. Decide to be free. This step may be the hardest one, but it’s necessary in order to experience personal freedom. You have to make the decision and commit to it. Once you do, your mind is more open to ways of becoming free.

  2. Trust that others will be OK. If you’re in a position where others count on you, trust that they will be cared for. Or if the freedom you seek, is to not be like the others around you, be OK with those individuals no longer being in your inner circle.

  3. Get To Know the Real You. A big part of experiencing true freedom is knowing who you are and embracing the real you. Accepting your true identity will not only help you achieve a level of personal freedom, but also allow you to keep it.

  4. Change your surroundings. Sometimes the freedom you seek doesn’t come until you separate yourself from your current environment. This was the case for me. It took me starting a new life in a totally new environment before I was able to start experiencing personal freedom.

  5. Don’t look back. For some this may be difficult, but in certain situations it’s necessary. By not looking back you allow yourself to establish a new “norm” for your life without the chains of old habits.

It doesn’t matter where you are in life, what situation you’re in. If you’re feeling trapped and its freedom that you seek, use these five steps to set you on a course for experiencing the personal freedom and happiness you want and deserve.
